JOHN N. MCFARLANE

John joined the Tierney Stauffer LLP Ottawa team as part of their counsel group in early 2026. He has been providing business law advice for over 49 years as partner and counsel in international, regional, and local law firms. He has participated in numerous complex mergers and acquisitions and corporate reorganizations.
For the last 30 years John has represented a global healthcare firm as external Canadian general counsel.
During his career, John has represented domestic and global corporations, business owners, and regulated professionals such as lawyers, judges, physicians, architects and pharmacists.
John practices Estates, Trust, and Wills law as well as succession and estate planning. He has earned the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation conferred by the international Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
John enjoys a wide variety of sports, including having been a competitive hockey player. He enjoys off-roading on his side by side, and fly fishing for smallmouth bass and speckled trout. For the last 35 years John and his extended family have cottaged at Big Rideau Lake. John coached his sons in youth hockey, baseball and soccer and volunteered for local sports, community and service organizations.
John is the founder of the McFarlane Family Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease.
