Mary Jane Binks, K.C. Named to the Best Lawyers in Canada List for Family Law
Mary Jane Binks, K.C. is the Senior Group Counsel in the Family Law Group and Estate Litigation practitioner. She has been recognized by Best Lawyers since 2006 and was named Ottawa Lawyer of the Year for Family Law by Best Lawyers in 2021. She advocates in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Trial Division) and the Ontario Court of Appeal. She also serves as an Arbitrator in Family Law disputes. In 1982 Mary Jane was appointed a Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel).
Mary Jane has served as a Family Law instructor for the Law Society of Ontario and as a sessional lecturer for the Carleton University Law Department. She frequently organizes and presents at continuing legal education conferences in Ottawa and throughout Ontario.
Mary Jane was the prestigious Advocates’ Society of Ontario’s 2016 Ottawa Honouree and the first Ontario Family Law Lawyer to receive this accolade. She was also awarded the Carleton Medal, the highest honour granted by the Ottawa Carleton County Law Association in 2018 in recognition of her legal career. She is an active member of the Ottawa legal community, the County of Carleton Law Association, the Advocates’ Society of Ontario, and the Canadian Bar Association. Mary Jane is also a past president of the Carleton County Law Association.
Mary Jane remains a vibrant member of the Ottawa community. She has been involved with and served on the Boards of Trustees of several organizations, including the Ottawa Civic Hospital, the Elizabeth Fry Society, the Mental Health Association for Ontario, Opera Lyra Ottawa, the Carleton University Board of Governors, and the National Management Team for the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.
As a passionate advocate for her client, Mary Jane gets clients results. She helps spouses obtain the support and equalization of property to which they are entitled and helps her clients settle Estate disputes.
Susan Mitchell Named to the Best Lawyers in Canada List for Personal Injury Litigation
Susan Mitchell has been a Partner at Tierney Stauffer LLP since 2007 and became Managing Partner in 2018. Susan practices civil litigation, focusing on personal injury law, medical malpractice, and insurance law. Susan has been recognized by Best Lawyers since 2013 and was named Ottawa Lawyer of the Year for personal injury litigation by Best Lawyers in 2022.
Susan is an active member of the County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA), the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA), The Advocates’ Society, and the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Law Association (SDGLA). She served several years as Chair of the New Lawyers and Articling Students Continuing Legal Education Committee. She has also spoken at numerous CCLA and Advocates Society educational programs. Susan has been a guest speaker at the Annual CCLA Solicitors Conference and Litigators Conference and a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law.
Susan is a past member of the Fundraising Committees for both the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley and the Charity Golf Tournament Committee for St. Patrick’s Home Foundation. She is a member of the Women’s Business Network (WBN) and sits on the Board of Directors for, and is an active volunteer with, the FAMSAC Emergency Food Cupboard in Bells Corners.
