Emily Chan, Articling Student
I am Tierney Stauffer LLP’s first, and hopefully only, articling student (AKA student-at-law/lawyer in training) during this COVID-19 pandemic! I have carriage of the firm’s small claims files, matters valued at $35,000 or less, from start to finish. I also assist lawyers with their larger files by conducting research, drafting pleadings, attending mediations, and gathering witness statements. I continue to learn a lot everyday and this is my favourite part of the job.
I enjoy solving problems in fast-paced environments and thinking on my feet. Multi-tasking and piecing together random pieces of a story are gratifying, especially when you know your efforts are improving one’s situation. Most of all, I like interacting with a wide range of parties. It allows me to learn more about society and the reasons behind an evolving legal system. Having the opportunity to advocate on behalf of clients is a profound responsibility that I cherish daily.
When not at work, I enjoy sweating from all sorts of physical activities: hiking, rock climbing, running, tennis, etc. Sports have always been a big part of my life and have constantly helped me surpass my limits. I also enjoy learning about different cultures/languages and how they differ from, or are similar to, one another. It confirms that there is more than one “right” way to do things.
Finally, the last book I read is called The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Anchor. In a nutshell, it talks about how there is almost always a positive in terrible experiences. I personally believe this too and it is an important reminder to seek the bright side of things.
