I have just completed my 31st year as a partner at Tierney Stauffer LLP.  I’d been a lawyer for 7 years when my classmate, Frank Tierney, talked to me about my coming to join his two brothers and another young professional in what became Tierney Tierney Tierney and Stauffer.

Our receptionist at the time decided that the firm name was too much of a mouthful and Tierney Stauffer LLP was soon born at 170 Holland Avenue. Over the years we have been very fortunate to grow into the firm you see today at 1600 Carling Avenue and in Cornwall, Arnprior, Kingston, and North Bay.

I have practiced civil litigation since 1983. Over 20 years ago our Law Society granted me the title of Specialist.

I represent clients in a wide variety of disputes—those who are injured, who have been sexually assaulted, are in contractual disputes, especially those involving insurers and those who have been defamed. I act for people who are in a fight with relatives over estate issues.

While I believe in settlement, I have trial experience, especially before juries, not something many lawyers can say.

I enjoy solving my clients’ problems. I understand that many of them are hurt, confused and angry. I try my best to give them straightforward advice and representation.

I have helped many not-for-profit organizations such as Operation Go Home, Third Wall Theatre, Ottawa Lawyers Feed the Hungry and the United Way.  Presently, I provide free legal advice to the Ottawa Little Theatre.

I live in beautiful rural Ottawa and am fortunate to have a property that requires a good deal of manual labour. Chopping wood and digging post holes are two great ways to relieve stress.

Despite the pandemic, I have continued my hobbies—writing, acting, cross-country skiing and walks in the woods with my wife, Catherine. I’m also a regular blood donor.

I left teaching public school long ago, but I always have been a believer in educating my clients about our legal system.
