Tierney Stauffer LLP is a proud sponsor of the YMCA-YWCA Lawyers for Kids Charity Hockey Tournament. Cale Harrison, an Associate with our Personal Injury and Litigation Department, is the Chair of the tournament and was the subject of a Q & A published in “Inspired Giving” Donor Newsletter on June 26th, 2017. An excerpt from this newsletter is below:

The Y is very fortunate to have amazing donors, supporters and volunteers who do great work with our team to help improve the lives families, children and youth in our community. In this issue we are proud to introduce you to Cale Harrison, Chair of our annual Lawyers for Kids Charity Hockey Tournament.

Under Cale’s chairmanship, this year’s tournament raised over $27,000 in support of the Before and After School Care Program at the Y. By profession, Cale is an associate with Tierney Stauffer LLP where he has been a lawyer for the past 8 years specializing in estate and personal injury law. Growing up in Peterborough ON, he picked up hockey at a young age and never gave up the sport so when the opportunity arose, Cale enthusiastically threw in his support in every way he could!

Q: How did you get involved with Lawyers for Kids Charity Hockey Tournament?

A: “I’ve been involved with the tournament since the very beginning in 2010. At that time, a call went out to the Ottawa legal community looking for hockey players to participate in a tournament honouring the late Jim O’Grady and I thought it would be a fun way to get involved in a local fundraising effort and to get to know some of my colleagues in the legal community.

Q: How did you become Chair of the tournament?

A: “Over the past several years, I’ve become heavily invested in the success of the tournament. I feel the passion in me to carry it forward. With the tight knit legal community in Ottawa, I was able to reach out to colleagues and spark their interest in the tournament by sharing my passion for the cause and for the game. Chair is really an artificial title, we have a great committee which is instrumental in making the event a success! I’d like to give a big shout out to our whole committee: Brian Scott, Gerry Myers, Bob Morrow, Richard Moore, and Chris Valentine.

Q: What does the YMCA-YWCA mean to you?

A: “To me the Y means inclusivity and the ability to support members of our community in need. I have been a member of the Y in the past and have come to know many people involved with the organization, from staff to volunteers to board members – I’m in awe at their generosity and commitment!”

Q: What is the most rewarding part of the tournament and what motivates you to come back each year?

A: “The most rewarding part of the tournament is knowing that the funds raised by the tournament have such a direct impact on the Y’s Before and After School Care Program. As a father of young daughter, I can understand the importance of having that level of care available and I’m proud to support the Y’s effort in that respect. It’s gratifying to see the support of local law firms, sponsors and donors each year all for a great cause. As well, it’s always a fun day seeing old friends and making new ones!”

Q: What are some of the challenges of the tournament?

A: “Its always a challenge getting players on board, the reality is that everyone has many obligations especially those of us in the legal community so it is hard to plan out rosters beforehand. But in the end, all of the firms and players pull through and we generally have great success in being able to put together a competitive but friendly and well attended tournament!”

Q: What is one thing you would like our donors and supporters to know about the Lawyers for Kids Charity Hockey Tournament?

A: “Through the generosity of the participants and sponsors, we are able to cover many of the tournament costs, which allows us to direct donor funds right into the kids’ programs where the money is needed most. Donors will be able to see the positive impact of their donation.”

On behalf of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region, the Financial Development team would like to take this moment to thank Cale for all his support, hard work and effort he put in to making this years’ event a success! We couldn’t have done it without you Cale!
