It’s real estate season! The Ottawa Real Estate Board recently announced that resale housing sales in Ottawa had another record month in June. Members of the OREA sold 1,895 residential properties in June through the Board’s Multiple Listing Service system compared with 1,685 in June 2008. This is an increase of 12.5 percent.

This is good news for real estate lawyers – and indeed our residential real estate lawyers have been very busy this year, particularly now that the summer is here.

Our firm believes in giving back to the community. This is evidenced by the important community and volunteer work that many of our lawyers do. Our firm is a strong supporter of the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley.  The BIA is a non-profit charitable organization that offers education, information, hope and support to brain injury survivors, their family members, friends, caregivers and professionals in the Ottawa Valley region. Our firm was instrumental in establishing and organizing the Annual Fundraising Gala for the BIA.

The inaugural Fundraising Gala was held in 2007. Over the last two years, Tierney Stauffer LLP has assisted the BIA in raising close to $100,000. The Third Annual Fundraising Gala will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Sala San Marco Banquet Hall on Preston Street at 6:00 p.m.  We are fortunate to have Michael O’Byrne of CTV as our MC, and are currently in the process of scheduling our Key Note Speaker. Our previous Key Note Speakers have included CFL Hall of Famer and Football Legend Terry Evanshen as well as two-time Canadian Olympic downhill skier, World Cup champion, and “Crazy Canuck”, Dave Irwin. Both Terry and Dave suffered a brain injury during their athletic careers.

(1) Tierney Stauffer LLP’s roots go back to 1982 when our Managing Partner, Stephen Tierney, opened his law practice in Ottawa. Stephen’s brother Frank joined the firm in 1983, and their brother Dana joined the firm in 1986. In 1989, Ian Stauffer came over from another firm to join his classmate Frank, and Tierney Stauffer LLP was born.

(5) Ian Stauffer is the 2009 President of the Carleton-County Law Association and he also wrote and starred in this year’s Lawyer Play called, “Lost in Paradise”.

(7) We recently hired Sabina Mok as an Associate in our Civil Litigation Practice Group. Sabina was one of our articling students during the 2008-2009 articling term.

(8) Erin Crotty, Kerri Ross and Angela McLaughlin of our firm recently got married. Sabina Mok is getting married in September. Love is in the air!

(9) Susan Mitchell, Sarah Saad and Sebastien Desmarais of our firm are bilingual and able to offer legal services to clients in both official languages.

(10) In order to keep up with the latest technological advances in the legal world, we hired George Munoz who is our fulltime, inhouse Technology Coordinator.
